While there are many “rules of thumb” regarding sound isolation of fitness clubs, it is impossible to develop a “one size fits all” design concept. The specifics will depend on many factors. These are usually spelled out in the building lease and/or the fitness franchise. Most of the time. there is a requirement that the franchisee retain the services of a local acoustical consultant to address sound issues.
That’s where we come in. We have worked with dozens of fitness studio franchise owners to control the sound level. We can review the site and project drawings, consider adjacent tenant lease arrangements, review the franchise owner’s manual regarding acoustics and sound control. and conduct onsite acoustic testing if needed. With that information, we can advise what additional construction is necessary to control sound and vibration emitted to adjacent and nearby tenants.
There are, in addition, other businesses and residences located “within earshot” of the fitness center. Local Ordinances likely include a Sound or Noise regulation that the Fitness Center must adhere to, besides all of the studio requirements. Once again, our services may very well be needed to assist the Fitness Franchise in fine-tuning the exterior attenuation. In some cases, we may be asked to join a committee that makes a presentation to the local Zoning Committee.
